Somethings Old ~ Somethings New

~ A Mid-Century Modern Redo

Calistoga, California:
When Mark Wilkinson and Carolynne Wilkinson Clair, owners of Dr. Wilkinson’s Hot Springs Resort in Calistoga, California, embarked upon a plan to rejuvenate their 1950’s mid-century resort, little did they know that a treasure trove of their mother, Edy’s, mosaics would play a part in the renewal they envisioned.

“We had nearly forgotten about mother’s mosaics, hanging from walls and peeking out of patios,” admits Carolynne. “When you see something everyday of your life, it can all too easily become taken for granted. We are therefore sharpening our vision and taking a fresh look at every inch of the property.”

As Mark and Carolynne refresh their resort, which put mud bathes on the map in the 1950’s, Edy’s mosaics act as a reminder of Dr. Wilkinson’s inherent charm. Landscaping and the purchase of new outdoor furniture to complement pools and patios has commenced and will continue through the coming spring. The central courtyard, which leads to the resort’s indoor pool, is currently being refurbished. The pool, at 102 degrees, serves as a giant hot tub and is popular the year round. The indoor area will boast new teak benches and plantings.

“While selecting fabrics and surfaces for our original building we have been researching the history of the era,” Carolynne explains. “Well known designers such as Ames, Eichler, Knoll and Herman Miller are guiding lights. We are not planning to emulate them or bring in replicas of their works, however their ground-breaking visions have given us insight as we update our look.”

Mark and Carolynne are planning room upgrades with clean, simple lines. The resort’s original building is targeted for completion the first quarter of 2009. “It will be more modern than country," according to Mark. “We appreciate the mid-century modern ‘form is function’ approach. It is the foundation of our resort. Everything here was created to renew the body and spirit in a direct, fundamental, sincere and cost effective manner. The designers created a trend intended to influence the way people related to their physical environments. Our parents created a trend to help them live in a manner compatible with the vision of mid-century design: simple, natural, and organic, with a reverence for living well.”

The late Dr. John Wilkinson, a chiropractor with a passion for alternative, holistic health care, and his wife Edy, founded Dr. Wilkinson’s Hot Springs Resort in 1952. The resort quickly gained momentum, attracting an ever-growing clientele and developing legions of loyal fans and customers from around the world. “Doc,” as Dr. Wilkinson was know around town, garnered the honorary title of “Mud King,” as he made Calistoga’s naturally hot mineral water and volcanic ash mud baths world famous.

Their children, Mark and Carolynne, have been immersed in the business of mud baths and mineral water treatments for more than 20 years. They enjoy carrying on the time-honored traditions their father and mother founded.
